Today we’ve been busy listing a batch of original 1930s 1 over 3 panel doors on the website.
These are good, solid period doors with plenty of life left in them. Most are currently painted, and there are some stripped examples that will be listed shortly. Alongside the more common flat-top versions, we’ve also added some of the arch-topped 1 over 3 doors, which are less often available.
A bit of history
The 1 over 3 panel design became very popular during the 1920s and 1930s as housebuilding expanded across the UK. The layout typically features:
-
One larger top panel
-
Three vertical panels below
-
A simple, practical design suited to everyday family homes
Unlike earlier Victorian doors, which were often heavier and more decorative, 1930s doors were designed to be lighter, more uniform and cost-effective, while still being made from solid timber. Many were produced in pine and then painted, which is why original painted examples are so common today.
They’re a good choice for anyone restoring a 1930s property or trying to keep replacement doors in keeping with the period.
Sizes and prices
We’ve included a few of the harder-to-find narrower sizes, including some at 27” (686 mm) wide — useful where space is tight or when matching existing openings.
Prices today range from £80 to £145, depending on size and condition.
If you’re working on a period property, these are a practical and affordable option. As always, stock varies and the best pieces tend to go quickly.
