Blog: Why Blue Lias Stone Still Matters

Here in Somerset, Blue Lias isn’t just another building material – it’s part of the landscape, the history, and the character of the area. From the dry-stone walls running through the Mendips to old farm buildings and village churches, Blue Lias has been used for centuries. And it’s still in demand today.

What Makes It Special?

It’s hard, durable, and has that unmistakable blue-grey tone. But beyond the practical stuff, there’s something more. Many pieces have fossil ammonites trapped inside them – clear, visible spirals frozen in time. That’s something concrete and personal, especially if you’re building something for the long term.

At Somerset Reclamation, we’re currently stocking three types of Blue Lias stone:

  • Large natural pieces – some with amazing fossils

  • Sorted building stone – hand-picked with a natural face

  • Guillotined stone – chopped to 150mm depth, or to your spec if needed

We don’t offer stone dressing, just clean, good-quality reclaimed and prepared material.

Local Stone for Local Jobs

Whether you’re repairing an old wall, starting a garden project, or trying to match existing stonework, using local Blue Lias just makes sense. It's the right look, the right feel – and it hasn’t travelled halfway around the world to get here.

Drop in to see what we’ve got. We’re always happy to walk you round and show you the different options.
